Choghadiya

Auspicious Time Slots of the Day · Vedic Astrology (Jyotish)

Choghadiya (also Chaughadia or Chogadia) is a traditional Vedic system for dividing the day and night into eight equal segments, each ruled by a planet and considered either auspicious, inauspicious, or neutral for undertaking activities. The name derives from "Chau" (four) and "Ghadia" (a unit of approximately 24 minutes in traditional timekeeping), reflecting the four-Ghadia duration of each segment. Choghadiya is one of the simplest and most practically applied timing tools in the Vedic tradition — used daily across India and among the Indian diaspora worldwide.

What It Reveals

Each of the eight daytime segments and eight night-time segments is assigned one of seven planetary rulers — Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, or Saturn — cycling in a fixed sequence. The sequence varies by day of the week, following a specific pattern. The planetary nature of each ruler determines the segment's quality: Amrit (Venus-ruled — considered the most auspicious, excellent for beginning almost anything), Shubh (Jupiter-ruled — auspicious, particularly good for spiritual matters, education, and auspicious ceremonies), Labh (Mercury-ruled — good for business, communication, and trade), Char (Moon-ruled — good for travel and movement), Udveg (Sun-ruled — generally inauspicious, good for government matters but avoided for most others), Kaal (Saturn-ruled — generally inauspicious), and Rog (Mars-ruled — inauspicious, associated with conflict and obstacles). Rahu Kalam, a separate 90-minute inauspicious window, is also noted.

How It Works

The Choghadiya is calculated from the local sunrise time for your location. The eight daytime Choghadiyas begin at sunrise and end at sunset; the eight night-time Choghadiyas begin at sunset and end at the following sunrise. The first segment of each day follows a fixed sequence based on the day of the week. The reading provides the complete schedule of all sixteen segments for your location today, with the quality of each clearly marked.

Who It's For

Choghadiya is practical for anyone who wants a simple, daily timing guide without the full complexity of a Muhurta analysis. It is widely used for scheduling business calls and meetings, beginning important journeys, making financial transactions, starting new ventures, and timing prayers or puja. It does not replace a full Muhurta for major life events like weddings or property purchases, but for the rhythm of daily decision-making, it is an invaluable and time-tested guide.
