Each planet rules a Mahadasha of a fixed duration: Sun (6 years), Moon (10 years), Mars (7 years), Rahu (18 years), Jupiter (16 years), Saturn (19 years), Mercury (17 years), Ketu (7 years), and Venus (20 years).

The starting Dasha is determined by the Moon's position in its Nakshatra (lunar mansion) at birth. The Nakshatra lord becomes the first Mahadasha ruler, with the remaining proportion of that period calculated from how far through the Nakshatra the Moon has traveled.
