Dasha Analysis

Vedic Planetary Period System · Vedic Astrology (Jyotish)

The Vimshottari Dasha system is one of the most powerful and unique contributions of Vedic astrology to the science of prediction. The word "Dasha" means "state" or "period" in Sanskrit, and the system divides human life into a sequence of planetary periods totalling 120 years — the maximum natural human lifespan according to Jyotish. Each planet rules a Mahadasha of a fixed duration: Sun (6 years), Moon (10 years), Mars (7 years), Rahu (18 years), Jupiter (16 years), Saturn (19 years), Mercury (17 years), Ketu (7 years), and Venus (20 years).

What It Reveals

Your current Mahadasha (major planetary period) sets the overarching theme of a multi-year chapter of your life, colouring everything from your dominant preoccupations to the kinds of events that tend to manifest. Within each Mahadasha, nine Antardashas (sub-periods of each planet in sequence) provide more granular timing. A well-placed Dasha lord that rules good houses in your chart tends to bring advancement, success, and the fulfilment of that planet's significations — Venus Dasha brings relationship and abundance themes, Jupiter Dasha brings expansion and wisdom, Saturn Dasha brings disciplined consolidation and karmic reckoning. A poorly placed lord or one that rules challenging houses tends to bring the themes of those houses to the foreground in their more difficult manifestation. Understanding which Dasha you are in — and what it calls for — is one of the most practically useful things a Jyotish reading can offer.

How It Works

The starting Dasha is determined by the Moon's position in its Nakshatra (lunar mansion) at birth. The Nakshatra lord becomes the first Mahadasha ruler, with the remaining proportion of that period calculated from how far through the Nakshatra the Moon has traveled. This creates a highly personalised sequence that differs from person to person even if born the same year. Your full Dasha sequence, once calculated, allows an experienced reader to map your life's major chapters with remarkable accuracy.

Who It's For

Dasha Analysis is essential for anyone navigating a significant life transition. If you are wondering why a particular period of life felt like pushing against a wall, or why another period brought unexpected blessings, the Dasha often explains it. It is especially valuable for planning major decisions — career moves, relationships, relocations — by understanding whether the planetary period supports that kind of endeavour or counsels patience and preparation.
