In Vedic astrology, Upaya — meaning "remedy" or "measure" in Sanskrit — is the art of mitigating difficult planetary influences and strengthening supportive ones through specific prescribed practices. These remedies have been documented in classical Jyotish texts for over two thousand years and draw on the principle that the universe operates through correspondences: every planet vibrates at a frequency that resonates with specific colours, metals, gemstones, mantras, days of the week, herbs, deities, charitable acts, and ritual observances.
What It Reveals
The gemstone system in Jyotish assigns a primary gemstone to each of the nine celestial bodies (Navagrahas): Ruby for the Sun, Pearl for the Moon, Red Coral for Mars, Emerald for Mercury, Yellow Sapphire for Jupiter, Diamond (or White Sapphire) for Venus, Blue Sapphire for Saturn, Hessonite Garnet (Gomed) for Rahu, and Cat's Eye Chrysoberyl for Ketu. The purpose of wearing a gemstone is to increase the planet's energy in your life — which makes prescription critically important: strengthening a planet that rules good houses in your chart and is well-placed amplifies positive effects; strengthening a planet that rules challenging houses or is poorly placed can amplify difficulties.
