Kundali Milan
Vedic Compatibility Matching · Vedic Astrology (Jyotish)
Kundali Milan — also known as Guna Milan or Ashtakoot Milan — is the traditional Vedic method of assessing compatibility between two people, most commonly before marriage. It has been practised for thousands of years in the Indian subcontinent and remains the primary compatibility check in most Hindu marriage traditions. The system compares the two individuals' Moon signs (Rashis) and Nakshatras (lunar mansions) across eight categories of life, assigning points to each, for a maximum total of 36 Gunas.
What It Reveals
The eight categories (Ashta Koota) cover the full spectrum of a shared life: Varna (spiritual compatibility and dharmic alignment), Vashya (mutual attraction and influence), Tara (destiny and health compatibility), Yoni (sexual and physical harmony), Graha Maitri (intellectual and emotional friendship), Gana (temperament — Deva, Manushya, or Rakshasa), Bhakuta (emotional and financial bonding across houses), and Nadi (genetic and health compatibility, the most heavily weighted at 8 points). A score above 18/36 is considered acceptable; above 28/36 is considered excellent. The Nadi category carries special weight because a Nadi Dosha (same Nadi) is traditionally considered a serious obstacle to health and progeny. Beyond the point score, the compatibility check also examines Mangal Dosha compatibility, the relative strength of both charts, and the karmic connection indicated by nodal overlays.
How It Works
The system requires the date, time, and place of birth of both individuals. The Moon's position in its Nakshatra and Pada (quarter of the Nakshatra) is the primary input. The eight kootas are calculated from these positions. A full reading also checks for Dosha compatibility — specifically Mangal Dosha, which is considered one of the most important single factors in marital harmony in the Vedic tradition.
Who It's For
Kundali Milan is most commonly sought before an arranged marriage, but it is equally useful for any couple wishing to understand the karmic dynamics between them — areas of natural flow, areas of potential friction, and the deeper cosmic purpose of their union. It is not a pass/fail system: a skilled reading can identify remedies for difficult placements and reveal the unique strengths of even a lower-scoring match.
