Mangal Dosha

The Mars Placement in Marriage · Vedic Astrology (Jyotish)

Mangal Dosha — also known as Kuja Dosha or simply "Manglik" — is one of the most widely known and widely discussed concepts in Vedic astrology in the context of marriage. It refers to the placement of Mars (Mangal or Kuja) in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house of the birth chart as counted from the Ascendant, the Moon, or Venus. The dosha is said to exist when Mars occupies any of these sensitive houses, which govern the self, domestic peace, the marriage partner, longevity of the partnership, and pleasures respectively.

What It Reveals

Mars is the planet of energy, aggression, assertion, and will. In the houses associated with partnership and domestic life, an unmodified Mars can bring fiery, combative energy into relationships — a drive to dominate, difficulty with compromise, and in traditional Vedic thinking, the potential for harm to the spouse or the marriage itself. This is the source of the popular but often misapplied belief that a "Manglik" person will cause widowhood or divorce. The reality is significantly more nuanced: the strength and sign of Mars, the aspects it receives, whether it is in its own sign (Aries, Scorpio) or exalted (Capricorn), and cancelling factors all modify the dosha substantially. Many people with Mangal Dosha have perfectly harmonious marriages. The key consideration is compatibility — in traditional Vedic matching, two Manglik partners are often recommended to marry each other, as both charts carry the same Martian energy and thus it is balanced rather than one-sided.

How It Works

Mangal Dosha is assessed from three reference points in the chart: the Ascendant, the Moon, and Venus. If Mars is in the relevant houses from all three, the dosha is considered strong. If only from one reference point, it is considered mild. Cancellation factors include Mars being in its own sign or exaltation, certain planetary aspects that pacify Mars, Jupiter's aspect on Mars, and Mars in specific signs (Leo, Aquarius) in certain houses. A complete reading assesses all these factors and provides a balanced picture rather than a simple yes/no verdict.

Who It's For

This reading is for anyone who has been told they are "Manglik" and wants to understand what that actually means for their specific chart — whether the dosha is mild, moderate, or strong; whether cancellation factors apply; and how this interacts with a potential partner's chart. It is also valuable for couples already together who want to understand the Martian dynamics in their relationship and how to work with them constructively.
