Prashna Kundali — "question chart" in Sanskrit — is the Vedic tradition of horary astrology: the casting of a chart for the exact moment a sincere question is asked, rather than for the moment of birth. It is one of the most remarkable and practically powerful branches of Jyotish. Unlike the natal chart, which requires accurate birth data, Prashna requires nothing from the questioner except the sincerity and urgency of their question. The chart cast at the moment of asking is considered to contain the answer.
What It Reveals
Classical Vedic texts on Prashna — particularly the Prashna Marga, Brihat Jataka, and Uttara Kalamrita — document the principles by which the chart is read. The Ascendant of the Prashna chart represents the questioner; the seventh house represents whatever or whoever is being asked about; the Moon's position, speed, and aspects reveal the state of affairs and likely development; and the natural significator (Karaka) of the subject of the question is located and assessed. A question about career looks at the 10th house; about love, the 7th; about money, the 2nd and 11th; about health, the 1st and 8th; about a missing item, the 4th and 7th. The chart reveals not only the answer but the timeline, the complicating factors, and what the questioner can do to influence the outcome.
How It Works
You state your question clearly and sincerely. The chart is cast for the precise time and location of the question. The reading analyses the chart according to Prashna principles — the Ascendant and its lord, the Moon, the relevant house lords and natural significators, planetary aspects and dispositors — to derive the answer. Prashna is also used when accurate birth data is unavailable, as a standalone predictive tool in its own right.
