The Solar Return chart is one of Western astrology's most celebrated predictive tools. It is cast for the exact moment the Sun returns to its natal degree each year — within a day or two of your birthday — and it represents a snapshot of the cosmic atmosphere inaugurating your new personal year. Unlike the natal chart, which is fixed for life, the Solar Return chart is entirely new each year, reflecting where you are in your life's journey and the specific themes the universe has arranged for the coming twelve months.
What It Reveals
The Solar Return reading begins with the Ascendant of the return chart, which reveals the overall flavour and approach of the coming year. A Solar Return with Aries rising brings a year of initiative and new beginnings; Scorpio rising suggests a year of depth, transformation, and confronting what has been hidden; Libra rising brings relationship and balance themes to the foreground. The position of the Sun in the return chart's houses tells you which domain of life will be the central stage for the year. The Moon's placement shows the emotional focus. The angular planets — those close to the 1st, 4th, 7th, or 10th house cusps — are particularly powerful and will dominate the year's experience. The Solar Return is read both as an independent chart and as an overlay on the natal chart: when a Solar Return planet exactly conjuncts a natal planet, the themes of both are strongly activated together in the coming year.
How It Works
You provide your birth date, time, and place of birth. The Solar Return moment is calculated (some practitioners cast it at birth location; others at the location where the individual will spend their birthday — both perspectives are noted). The return chart is then read house by house with special attention to the angular planets, the Sun and Moon placements, and the house that natally rules the most currently active area of your life.

The Solar Return is sought most naturally around the birthday period — a time when people naturally reflect on the year past and look ahead to the year coming. It provides a specific, detailed forecast for the twelve months ahead that is far more personalised than a generic Sun-sign forecast: two people with the same Sun sign will have completely different Solar Returns depending on their birth time and birth-year planetary configuration.
