About This Card
A skeletal figure in black armour rides a white horse, carrying a black banner emblazoned with a white rose — the symbol of purity and new life. Before the horse, a king lies dead. A bishop prays. A woman kneels. A child offers flowers. The sun rises between two towers in the background. The Death card is one of the most misunderstood in the deck — it almost never means physical death. It means transformation: the ending of one form of life to make way for another.
Upright Meaning
Endings, change, transformation, transition, letting go of the past.
Death upright is a powerful and ultimately freeing card. It announces the end of something significant — a relationship, a phase of life, a belief system, a version of yourself. This ending is necessary. What is dying has run its course; holding on only delays the new life waiting on the other side. The white rose on Death's banner is not ironic — it is sincere. Every ending carries within it the seed of a beginning. Allow the transition. Grieve what needs to be grieved. Then face forward.
Reversed Meaning
Resistance to change, inability to move on, clinging to old patterns.
Death reversed suggests resistance to an ending that has already happened, or that is inevitable. You may be clinging to a relationship, a situation, or an identity that has already run its course — out of fear, out of grief, out of the comfort of the familiar. This resistance does not stop the change; it only makes it more painful. Ask yourself honestly what you are afraid to lose — and whether holding on is actually costing you more than letting go ever would.
Death in a Reading
When Death appears in your spread, notice your immediate emotional response — tarot works through resonance. Consider the card's position (past, present, future, obstacle, or outcome) and the surrounding cards, which can amplify or soften its meaning.
