Four of Cups

Minor Arcana · Element Water · Planet Moon in Cancer

Keywords: apathy, contemplation, withdrawal, discontent, missed opportunity

About This Card

A figure sits cross-armed beneath a tree, staring at three cups arranged on the ground before them. A fourth cup is being offered by a cloud-born hand, but the figure does not seem to notice — or is deliberately not looking at it. The landscape is peaceful but the figure's posture is closed, turned inward. The Four of Cups is the card of the moment when we are so absorbed in our own discontentment that we cannot see the gift being offered right in front of us.

Upright Meaning

Contemplation, apathy, re-evaluation, missed opportunities.

The Four of Cups upright asks you to examine whether you are currently missing an opportunity or an offer because you are too absorbed in your own dissatisfaction. Something is being extended to you — a relationship, a creative opening, a shift in circumstances — but you may not be in a state to see it or receive it. This card also validates the need for a period of honest introspection: sometimes withdrawal and reevaluation are necessary. Just make sure you are processing, not simply avoiding.

Reversed Meaning

Sudden awareness, choosing happiness, acceptance.

The Four of Cups reversed is often a positive sign: the period of withdrawal is ending, the eyes are opening, and you are becoming aware again of what life is offering you. A sudden shift in perspective — seeing a situation from a fresh angle — makes the path forward clear. It can also suggest that you are finally accepting and moving on from a situation that previously had you stuck. The fourth cup is visible. You can reach for it now.
