Four of Pentacles

Minor Arcana · Element Earth · Planet Sun in Capricorn

Keywords: security, conservatism, hoarding, control, stability

About This Card

A crowned figure sits with a pentacle balanced on their head, two held under their feet, and one gripped tightly to their chest. The city is behind them — they have left their community to sit alone with their possessions. The posture is closed, guarded, and slightly fearful. The Four of Pentacles speaks the complex language of material security: the genuine wisdom of saving and protecting what you have worked for, and the shadow of hoarding, control, and the fear that drives it.

Upright Meaning

Saving, security, conservatism, hoarding, stability.

The Four of Pentacles upright has two faces. In its positive expression, it counsels wise stewardship of your resources — this is not the time for lavish spending or risky investments, but for conservation, stability, and careful management of what you have built. In its more challenging expression, it asks you to examine where the drive for security has become a prison: where hoarding, controlling, or holding too tightly to people or money is preventing the natural flow of abundance. Security is real; fear dressed as security is something else entirely.

Reversed Meaning

Greed, materialism, self-protection, financial insecurity.

The Four of Pentacles reversed can indicate a releasing of the grip — a willingness to share, to spend, to risk, to be generous after a period of tight holding. This can be a positive loosening that allows prosperity to flow again. It can also suggest a sudden financial instability or a loss that was precipitated by poor stewardship. Ask: where are you holding on out of genuine wisdom, and where are you holding on out of fear? The open hand both gives and receives.
