About This Card
A king sits on a throne in the middle of turbulent water — not on a stable shore, but in the midst of the waves themselves. He holds a cup and a sceptre, his expression calm. A fish leaps from the water on his right; a ship sails in the distance. The King of Cups has not escaped the emotional realm — he has learned to reign within it. He is the master of the full depth of feeling: wise enough to feel everything, strong enough not to be controlled by any of it.
Upright Meaning
Emotionally balanced, compassionate, diplomatic.
The King of Cups upright represents emotional maturity of the highest order: a compassionate, wise, and emotionally steady presence that offers calm in turbulent situations. This king has done his inner work — he knows his own depths and is not frightened by them or by the emotional depths of others. This is a time to lead from a place of genuine care and emotional intelligence, to be the steady presence others can anchor to, and to handle difficult situations with both compassion and firm wisdom.
Reversed Meaning
Emotional manipulation, moodiness, volatility.
The King of Cups reversed warns of the shadow side of deep emotional awareness: emotional manipulation using insight and empathy as leverage, moodiness swinging between warmth and cold withdrawal, or the appearance of emotional stability that conceals a volatile inner life. It can also indicate repression — pushing emotions so far below the surface that they become controlling in indirect ways. The inner work is never fully complete. What emotion are you currently refusing to feel?
