About This Card
A horned, winged figure with an inverted pentagram on its forehead sits on a half-cube throne. Chained to the throne are a man and a woman — naked, wearing loose chains they could slip off at any time. This is the card's deepest truth: the chains are not locked. The devil here is not an external entity but the embodiment of our own attachments, compulsions, and shadow beliefs. The figures have chosen to stay, perhaps because the chains have become familiar.
Upright Meaning
Shadow self, attachment, addiction, restriction, materialism, bondage.
The Devil upright invites you to look honestly at what is keeping you bound. An addiction, a toxic relationship, a limiting belief, an obsession with status or security — whatever form it takes, there is something you are serving that is not serving you. This card does not judge you for it. Every human being knows what it is to be chained by their own nature. But it does ask: are you aware of the chain? Awareness is the beginning of freedom. The chains are loose. You can leave.
Reversed Meaning
Releasing limiting beliefs, exploring dark thoughts, detachment, freedom.
The Devil reversed is one of the most liberating cards in the reversed position — it suggests that you are in the process of breaking free from a pattern, addiction, toxic relationship, or limiting belief that has held you back. The chains are coming off. This can feel disorienting, even frightening, because the familiar prison felt like safety. Trust the process of liberation. You are not losing something essential — you are shedding what was never truly yours.
