The Sun
Major Arcana · Number XIX · Element Fire · Planet Sun
Keywords: joy, vitality, success, optimism, radiance
About This Card
A naked child rides a white horse beneath a blazing sun, arms outstretched, a red banner flying, sunflowers blooming along a garden wall. The child is pure joy — uninhibited, confident, alive. The sun radiates warmth and clarity across everything in the scene. There are no shadows in this card. The Sun is the most unambiguously joyful card in the Major Arcana: the light after the Moon's confusion, the warmth after the Tower's cold destruction.
Upright Meaning
Positivity, fun, warmth, success, vitality, joy, radiance.
The Sun upright is a wonderful, life-affirming card. Success is real; joy is available; the light is genuinely shining on your situation. This is a time to celebrate, to be visible, to let yourself be seen in your full brightness without apology. The child on the horse is not performing happiness — it is simply, completely itself. This card asks you to reconnect with that same uncomplicated aliveness. Something is going very right. Let yourself feel it.
Reversed Meaning
Inner child blocked, excessive optimism, delayed success.
The Sun reversed does not darken the card entirely — the sun is still shining, just partially obscured. It may suggest that you are struggling to access your own joy: blocked by pessimism, self-doubt, or the habit of diminishing your own light. Success may be delayed, or you may be unable to see clearly how well things are going. Reconnect with what genuinely brings you delight — not as a reward for achievement, but as a practice of being fully alive.
